Salamander Space Marines

As soon as I saw the Salamanders, I knew I had to collect them. I just thought they would look great on the battlefield (and I also like the colour green!). As I found out more and more about them I liked them even more. Usually when I get an army it starts when I first see the models. The next thing is an army’s history (and I found the Salamanders excellent), and finally it is there special rules (anyone who collects an army for this reason first is scum and should be burned).

I spent much time delving into the army’s background looking through many sources and found the idea behind them very interesting. I particularly liked their beliefs and that of the blacksmith and the hammer and the anvil, portraying their skill and craft in weapon making.

A tournament called “The Waaagh” was coming up, and I decided that they would be the army I would take to it. The army was to be 1500pts and I thought a good place to start would be the Salamander’s box set. I was lucky, because the box was delivered late (I had ordered first class) and so those nice people at mail order through in some free stuff (namely 10 assault marines and some extra bits such as thunder hammers and storm shields.)

The tournament used the Swiss system and basically this system worked to your advantage if you have lots of troop points and so that’s what I did. I decided to go for an all infantry army and take big ten man tactical squads to get a good troop points total.

I used this tournament to start my army off and I believe it is a good way to start an army and begin to get to grips with it as you face many different opponents.

A space marine army is a good army for beginners as you know what a unit should be doing (i.e. you know you don’t want your devastators to charge off towards the enemy and engage them in combat) and the many chapters give you a wide range of ideas for painting. I wouldn’t say that a beginner shouldn’t collect a Salamanders army to start with but just use a basic space marine army first before trying another chapter.

Salamander armies aren’t too different to an ordinary army but I enjoy making themed armies and the special rules released for them make them a lot more fun to play. One special rule is that all models in the army suffer a –1 initiative penalty. The reason for this is not known, it could be a flaw in the gene seed or perhaps that they live on a low gravity world. Another special rule is there option to play on an extra turn if the game finishes adding a whole new edge to battles (although the people at the tournament wouldn’t let me use this, OH but I'm allowed to use the –1 initiative rule, yes I’m very bitter about this).
