  Ultramarine Veteran Tyranid Hunter Squad
Entered into the Ultramarine Veteran Hunter Competition April 2001

by Joseph Channon and Michael T. Wei Na

Of all the Marine chapters of the Imperium, it is the Ultramarines who have had the longest and most bitter relationship with the Tyranid race. Since Hive fleet Behemoth first attacked Ultramar the Ultramarines have hated the Tyranids, and so they more than any other chapter have taken special training measures to deal with this alien threat. Chaplain Cassius personally supervises the training
in this area, and though his lessons are not always easy to remember during a heated battle, the benefits that they have given to the war against the Tyranids have been invaluable.

The most noticeable step that the Ultramarines have taken is the establishment of the 1st Veterans. The 1st Veterans are an elite squad of Tyranid hunters comprised of the five most skilled warriors in the first company and their leader is selected from among them after proving himself in battle. Over the centuries there have been many successful 1st squads, for example the squad led by Sergeant Lamentius once boarded a dormant Hive ship that had dropped out of the warp near to the Delcartus system and were able to destroy its synaptic links to rest of the hive fleet before it could alert other ships to the presence of such rich prey-worlds.

Sergeant Caelius leads the current 1st Veteran squad and though they have only taken part in a few battles so far, they have contributed to miraculous victories in situations that have appeared doomed from the start.

An Ultramarines army of any size may include the 1st Veteran Squad Caelius if fighting Tyranids. If you decide to include them then they count as one of the elites choices for the army. The squad must be used exactly as below, and may not be given additional equipment from the Space Marine armoury. The 1st Veteran Squad Caelius may be used regardless of whether the players have agreed to the use of special characters.

Squad: The squad consists of Veteran Sergeant Caelius and 4 Veteran Space Marines.

Equipment: Boltgun, frag grenades, krak grenades, Terminator honours, one Marine replaces his Boltgun with a flamer. In addition Caelius is armed with a power weapon, Auspex and Purity seals.

Special Rules:

Fearless: The squad has survived countless encounters with the Tyranid race, seeing many things that would make lesser men go insane through fear. Nothing that the Tyranids can throw at them will even surprise them. When fighting Tyranids the squad will never fall back, they are assumed to automatically pass any morale checks they are required to make even against attacks which normally force their target to automatically fall back. The squad cannot be pinned.

Hatred: Throughout their many encounters with the Tyranids, the squad has learned to loathe these creatures to such an extent that in close combat they always hit on a 3+ regardless of their opponent’s weapon skill.

Specific targeting: When rolling to wound against a Tyranid unit, if the weak spot of the creature is identified by the Ultramarine player (as on page 45 of “Codex Tyranids”*) the unit may re-roll its dice to wound taken using boltguns or during close combat. If the second roll still fails to wound then it may not be rolled again. Mutable genus creatures, Old One Eye and The Red Terror count as the generic type of creature that they represent (e.g. The Red Terror as a Ravener). The Ultramarine player may not look at page 45 of “Codex Tyranids” during the game, however he may do so before or after.

Summary of specific targeting:
1. Roll to wound
2. Attempt to identify the weak spot of the creature
3. If successful re-roll failed 'to wound' dice.

Hellfire Rounds: The 1st Veteran Squad are armed with a limited supply of hellfire shells. These shells contain mutagenic acid which is specifically designed to take out large Tyranid creatures. Once per game, the squad may opt to fire their hellfire rounds instead of firing normally. Hellfire rounds are treated as a normal bolter shots but always wound a roll of 4+. The squad must remain stationary to use hellfire shells and may not rapid fire as these shells require special attention when loading.

Squad Markings

The squad is relatively small so a lot of attention can be paid to each individual model. To start with the 1st veterans have the same markings any other Ultramarine veteran. However, on the left shoulder pad a small yellow star with a '1' inscribed in the center donates their elevated status. This represents the many battles in which the 1st squad has fought in. The Unit will not display obvious markings or trophies that would stray from the codex dictates as the Ultramarines would consider this a dishonour to their Primarch.
