Space Marine Fleets

“On land, in the air and across the stars, my loyal sons shall always know victory!”

No matter where you go, you cannot hide from the Emperor’s finest, Adeptus Astartes, the Imperial Space marines. And now you can use these awesome warriors in the vastness of space to vanquish the foes of the Imperium.

The rules provided for the space marine fleet really help to capture the character of the army. A space marine fleet will usually only consist of 3 or 4 large ships and the rest of the fleet is made up of escorts. There were originally only 2 ships released for the space marine fleet, with the escorts from the Imperial fleet used to bulk out the rest of the army (although the escorts are slightly different in terms of the space marine’s rules) however, many new Space marine ships have been released in Battlefleet gothic magazine 2 (as well as the new Necron fleet list) although unfortunately I’ve been unable to get my hands on it (someone bought all 4 copies from the Kingston store; you know who you are, just hope i don’t ever find you). Anyway, when i do get a copy i will inform all of you about the new space marine ships (and the Necron ones), but until then I’ll just use those originally released in the white dwarf.

A space marine fleet is quite a good starter army for a number of reasons. Firstly it uses all the basic rules supplied in the Battlefleet gothic rule book (unlike the Eldar who have more or less there whole own new rules section) and all the special rules they do have are simple to understand and use, no messing around with ponsy Eldar movement rules and their own table (don’t get me wrong though i do like the Eldar fleet, but only when I’m using them and they’re not being used against me). With a Space Marine fleet it does exactly what it says on the tin, i.e. blow large holes in other ships.

Another benefit of a space marine fleet is that they are very good when it comes to boarding actions, as they add +2 to their boarding action roll, and +1 to hit and run attacks.
