Tournament Report Wei (The Waaagh the 16th to 17th Jan)Page
1
Well for my first tournament using an Imperial Guard
Steel Legion army they did pretty well. Overall I won the best painted army, best
painted single 40k miniature and picked up the quiz prize. In the end I
came a respectable 4th place out of 50. You can see my army here.
Gameplay wise I did rather badly. The first three
games were disastrous. My first game was against a Khorne Besereker
army. I played against 4 rhinos with tooled up beserkers and 8
possessed. In the end I think I managed to destroy 1 or two Rhinos. I
blame the ordinance for missing constantly. With the amount of weaponry
I had I did expect more. Needless to say I got completely slaughtered in
combat. This defeat put me in bottom place. I could see it was not going
to be my day. The second game was against a Dark Eldar army. The
special scenario restricted all units except HQ and troops units to
start in reserve. That
meant that I would not have any of my ordinance. The beginning of the
game started well. I took out several raiders and proceeded to shoot
down the troops. However a mistake with my deployment left one flank
vulnerable and I lost two squads to a retinue. One unit that did me
proud was the Hellhound. It came on from reserve on the 3rd
turn and burned a huge Incubi squad and catching them is crossfire. The
game was coming to an end and I realised that I wasn’t causing enough
causalities. It didn’t help that my Russ didn’t turn up until turn
4. The game ended on turn 5 with me failing to roll a 3+. Not good
considering I was three models away from breaking him. I think the
problem was that he hid most of his models away and sat out of line of
sight. Not very Dark Eldar like. In the end I drew the game. I knew I
should have one that one. The third game was a complete shambles. This time it
was against a Crimson Fists army. Again
I failed to destroy transports. Never seem to roll that 4+. The game was
already going badly. All three ordinance weapons didn’t do any
significant damage for the first two turns. When the assault marines
showed up I knew I was in trouble. They wiped out two tanks. The
Hellhound came on and tried to drive them back but of course all four
made their saves. Those assault marines just didn’t die. Krak missiles
heavy bolters the lot fired against them. Never got them. The hellhound
managed to cause a casualty on the command squad so they fell back. They
were 2” from my model but of course they fell back with a double one.
Anything else and they would have been aught in crossfire. They
proceeded to rip through my army with the help of the assault marines. I
lost that game too. At the end of day one things looked bleak. I had drawn
one and lost two. Residing at the bottom of the table having only picked
up 10 points for selection (apparently I should have taken nothing but
troops) I could only blame myself. Never underestimate your opponent’s
luck or underestimate yours for that matter.
