Last Stand (Black Templars vs Tyranids)

Note that in this scenario the Tyranids out number the Black Templars 3:1. The game lasts for 6 turns and the Tyranids must kill every single marine to win.

The drop pods were ready; the marines were ready for the mission up ahead. The outline for the mission was that they were to drop in on to a small nest of the creatures which they were to exterminate before making their way out of there.

The Techmarines were making the final checks now, Marshal Kurtz had already come onboard his pod and the assembled marines where waiting for one man now.

A few minutes later he entered. Flanked by a Chaplain the Emperors Champion walked into the room, and as he did so an awed hush went through the assembled marines as he boarded his own pod. Almost half an hour later the pods impacted on the planets surface. The marines sprang forth preparing to begin the extermination. Then the marines saw that something was very wrong. There was no nest in sight. Instead the entire horizon was filled with Tyranids. Reconnaissance had been wrong about the situation and now they were all going to pay dearly for the mistake.

Turn 1:

Black Templars:

Turn one began with the black templars taking up strategic positions around the ruins, because they had arrived by drop pods there was not much effective shooting. The little shooting that did occur caused the death of 1 Zoanthrope, 1 ripper swarm and reduced another swarm to 1 wound.

Tyranids:

The entire army swarmed forwards, with the monsters coming at the templars from all sides. In the shooting phase the biovores missed completely (setting their standard for the rest of the game). The two surviving Zoanthropes fired their warp blasts at the nearest squad, killing a total of 3 marines and a neophyte leaving only 2 left alive.

Turn 2:

Black Templars:

Again shooting proved to be largely ineffective with the only thing of note being the death of another ripper swarm and the carnifex losing a wound to a plasma gun.

In the assault phase two marines ran into the carnifex and caused another wound. In return the carnifex missed with all 3 of its attacks leaving the marines victorious for now.

Tyranids:

Again the entire army surged forward, with the Genestealers on the north side ready to assault if they rolled highly enough on the fleet of foot (I was using the new Genestealer rules from the cult army list-Joe).

In the shooting phase, the surviving Zoanthrope killed two more marines from the squad with the power fist and the hive tyrants failed to do any damage with their venom cannons.

The Genestealers rolled a 4 for their fleet of foot and this left them in assault range of the squad on the hill.

The Genestealers charged in, and two Lictors on the opposite edge of the board also tried to assault. However the Lictors had to pass through a forest in order to reach the marines but neither rolled highly enough on their difficult terrain tests.

In the combat on the hill, the Genestealers lashed out with incredible ferocity and annihilated their target before they could raise a hand to protect themselves. The Carnifex suffered another wound and then crushed both marines with its massive claws.

Unfortunately the Genestealers only rolled a 3 for their sweeping advance and so couldn’t reach the command squad, which was right next to them.
